Environmentally friendly corrosion protection

A new paper describes corrosion protection properties of an environmentally friendly polyvinyl alcohol coating reinforced by a heating treatment and lignin nanocellulose.

A method combining a heating treatment with the addition of lignin nanocellulose (LNC) was designed to improve the corrosion resistance of a polyvinyl alcohol coating.

Corrosion resistance greatly improved

The heating treatment induced an elimination reaction occurred between the hydroxyl groups, which significantly reduced the water transport channels formed by the intermolecular forces of the hydroxyl groups. Moreover, the lignin nanocellulose worked effectively as a barrier against the penetration of corrosive media.

Due to the synergistic effects of the heating treatment and the addition of lignin nanocellulose, the corrosion resistance of the composite coating was greatly improved.
