Wacker invests in new production site

The Munich-based Wacker Group has started construction of an alcoholysis coating plant at its Nünchritz site.

The plant will supply key precursors for the formulation of silicone-based building protection products and binders for facade paints and industrial coatings. Currently, such substances are produced exclusively at the Burghausen site. The plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2022. The investment will amount to around EUR 30 million.

Wacker uses silanes and liquid resins to formulate many silicone specialties: Architectural preservatives and concrete protection coatings contain such hydrophobic and thus water-repellent active ingredients, as do binders for facade paints, corrosion-resistant protective coatings or heat-resistant powder coatings.

New plant

The Group currently produces these additives in the alcoholysis coating facility at its Burghausen plant. There, by-products from silicone production are converted into silanes and liquid resins by reaction with alcohol. These substances are further processed into silicone products for construction and coating applications in both Burghausen and Nünchritz.

In the future, Wacker will also produce such formulation components in Nünchritz. In the north of the plant, construction workers are currently laying the foundations for a new alcoholysis coating plant in which products from methylchlorosilane synthesis can be further processed.
