Microcapsules containing essential oil for inhibition of drug-resistant bacteria

A new paper focuses on the fabrication of epoxy coatings loaded with urushiol microcapsules containing essential oil for inhibition of drug-resistant Helicobacter pylori and Staphylococcus aureus.

In a new study, agarwood essential oil loaded microcapsules (E-UMs) acted as bacteriostatic agent for the use in long-term antibacterial coatings. The focus was on urushiol microcapsules (UMs) as shell material containing the essential oil (EO) as core material.

Inhibiting the proliferation of bacteria

Test results showed that the release of EO from E-UMs showed a sustained-release effect under different storage temperatures (25, 100 and 150 °C). Specifically, by adding low content of E-UMs (10 wt%), epoxy coatings could play an important role in inhibiting the proliferation of drug resistant Helicobacter pylori and resistant Staphylococcus aureus on the medium of the final coatings.

The study has been published in Progress in Organic Coatings, Volume 161, December 2021.
