October issue: Water-borne coatings in the focus
Water-borne coatings have experienced an astonishing upswing in the last 70 years since they first appeared on the market. These systems now account for almost half of the entire paints and coatings market. If one trusts the forecasts, the share will steadily increase as the demand for them grows, as consulting firm Orr & Boss finds in their market study (page 16). Water-based systems dominate the decorative coatings segment, of course, but the outlook for the non-decorative segment is also optimistic.
In their article, Milena Wundlechner and Dr Philipp Kratzer from Clariant show four approaches to achieve greater sustainability without sacrificing processability or performance (page 22). They present sustainable wax additives for water-borne wood coatings that can help achieve this aim.
An upswing or a downturn? How have coatings producers mastered the pandemic? Stefan Dreesmann of Chem Research analysed the recent performance of the Top 11 global players (page 10)
