Extensive research and developments in novel smart coating system facilitates better corrosion protection and longer service life. Recent research in biomimetics materials lead the fabrication of smart multifunctional coating systems. Unique properties of the lotus leaf, pitcher plant, and mussels were duplicated on various artificial surfaces over metal substrates.

Enhancing anticorrosion efficiency

Bioinspired coatings are validated as a fascinating route for enhancing anticorrosion efficiency by introducing multifunctionalities in it. A current review elaborated an overview of published reports on bioinspired organic/ inorganic superhydrophobic and slippery coatings for the corrosion protection of metal substrates. The state-of-art of several bioinspired multifunctional high-performance coatings were portrayed in detail with examples.

The review has been published in Progress in Organic Coatings, Volume 168, July 2022.
