Tetrahydroperfluorooctanol acryloybenzoate (FPB) monomer with phenyl as bridging group was synthesised and characterised by FT-IR, 1H NMR and 19F NMR. Afterwards, corresponding phenyl-based fluoropolyacrylate (FPB-co-MMA) and two contrast samples (FOA-co-St and FOA-co-MMA) were prepared by emulsion polymerisation. Particle size and Zeta potential were employed to analyse the emulsion stability.

Subsequently, these fluoropolyacrylates were applied onto the surface of cotton fabrics to make them hydrophobic.

Excellent and stable hydrophobicity

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved the successful application of fluoropolyacrylates onto cotton fabrics. Thermal properties of fluoropolyacrylates and treated cotton fabrics were evaluated by thermal gravity analysis (TGA). Water contact angle and washing durability measurement found that cotton fabric treated with FPB-co-MMA has obtained excellent and stable hydrophobicity.
