Cerium tartrate as inhibitor pigment for corrosion protection in epoxy coatings

The efficiency of corrosion inhibition of a new pigment, cerium tartrate, on aluminium alloy was studied.

The results of release measurements of Ce ions from epoxy coating in 0.05 mol/L NaCl indicate that cerium ions are able to transport through the epoxy coating, which is a key characteristic of inhibitor pigment.

Improving the barrier effect

The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) shows that cerium tartrate is an effective pigment for improving the barrier effect of epoxy coatings on AA2024-T3. The self-healing ability of cerium tartrate in artificial defects was verified by scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). Cerium tartrate played a self-healing effect at the defects in epoxy coatings.
