Dual cure for improved finishes
Carmakers are increasingly moving towards the use of plastics to provide fuel-efficient weight reductions. In his article in Issue 3/2018 of the European Coatings Journal Paul Gaevert and his co-authors explained that UV-cured coatings offer the advantages of rapid curing, but some form of dual cure is needed to avoid having to tailor the curing apparatus to each individual component design.
However, levels of free isocyanate in coatings are at the same time coming under increasing pressure. As an alternative to conventional multifunctional isocyanates, some isocyanate-bearing acrylates were evaluated. Within the webcast Geavert explains why the combination of UV curing with thermal cure by using polymers with both isocyanate and acrylate functionality allows high performance to be obtained with rapid curing. The new system was evaluated on coatings applied to plastics suitable for automotive interior applications.
