Empa’s environmentally friendly EDA-DOPO flame retardant poised for market entry

Researchers at Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology in Dübendorf, have developed EDA-DOPO, a novel, environmentally friendly flame retardant for use as a replacement for halogenated chemicals in polyurethane (PU) foams.

Additionally, the team have derived and patented a sustainable and economical synthesis method for the new flame retardant. Now, through the collaboration of two of Empa's industrial partners, the innovation is advancing towards its market launch.
