Effect of reactive monomers on UV films

Scientists investigated the effect of reactive monomers on polymer structure and abrasion resistance of UV cured thin films in a new study.

Abrasion resistant UV-curable coatings were prepared by mixing an aliphatic urethane diacrylate and different reactive diluents with the aim to bring into light the influence of monomer backbone and functionality on thermomechanical properties and more specifically on abrasion resistance. Therefore, the interdependence between physical damages (abrasion and corresponding haze value) and structural characterization (conversion, crosslink density and glass transition temperature) was discussed, pointing out some of the pitfalls to be avoided.
