Application of organic resin hybrids bearing alkoxysilane -OSi(OR)x reactive groups is gaining considerable traction in modern scientific and patent literature. One of the reasons for such attention is the unique set of high-end properties, provided by these types of technologies, allowing them to address a number of important challenges facing the modern coating industry. Silylated polyurethanes are versatile in terms of structural diversity and design, provide coatings with high productivity and extended process window as well as allow cutting-edge innovation in terms of sustainability and PFAS footprint reduction. In our presentation we will discuss how silylated type resin systems can be used to facilitate formulation of protective coatings with improved performance characteristics. The scope of the experimental investigation will encompass side-by-side comparison of the newly developed resin technology with various technology benchmarks including standard polyester-melamines, silicone- polyesters or most demanding PFAS-based coating systems

Katja Kustermann is a Lab Manager with a focus on Application Technology for Wax Additives at Münzing, showcasing over one year in this role. She recently completed her Master’s thesis at the Hempel Foundation Coatings Science and Technology Centre during her time at the Technical University of Denmark. Katja holds a Master’s degree in Applied Surface and Material Sciences from Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, building on her prior experience in the R&D department for wax additives at Münzing during her Bachelor’s thesis. Her academic journey includes a Bachelor’s program in Chemical Engineering with a specialization in Colors and Coatings from the same university.

Coil coating applications are characterised by high technological barriers, necessary to ensure high performance in terms of chemical and mechanical resistance, as well as to meet increasingly demanding aesthetic requirements. In the evolving field of metal coil finishing, low gloss appearances are gaining popularity for several reasons. Achieving the desired look without compromising quality or reliability has been a challenge until now. Novel spherical monosized polymer beads provide exceptional low gloss appearances at different angles while maintaining vital performance qualities like strong adhesion, corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, and durability in metal coils. Whether it’s automotive panels, appliances, or architectural elements, polymer beads empower manufacturers to achieve the desired visual impact. Monosized polymer beads are multi-functional tools and by choosing the right particle sizes it is also possible to design the desired haptics of the surface – textured or smooth. This talk will present the technology of spherical monosized polymer beads and give ideas for improving visual appearance and haptics of your coil coatings.
