Powder coatings have emerged as a significant technology in the coatings industry, largely due to their environmental benefits and versatile application potential. Recent advancements have made powder coatings even more attractive.
Traditionally, the curing process required high temperatures, limiting their use to substrates that could withstand such heat. However, modern developments have led to powder coatings that can cure at much lower temperatures. This breakthrough has expanded the range of substrates that can be coated, including more heat-sensitive materials such as plastics, composites, and even wood. The ability to cure at lower temperatures not only broadens application possibilities but also reduces energy consumption, making the process more efficient and cost-effective.
As a solvent-free system with no overspray, overcoming previous obstacles has contributed to significant global market growth over the past decade for powder coatings. According to market research, the global powder coatings market was valued at approximately $7.5 billion in 2015, with a total volume of around 1.8 million metric tons. By 2023, the market value had grown to around $15 billion, with a volume of over 3 million metric tons.
Several key advances will be discussed during the conference, focussing on advances in resin technology (low-temperature curing resins such as polyesters, epoxies and hybrids) and infrared and UV-curing available for some types of powder coatings. Fast-acting curing agents that initiate cross linking as well as catalysts (lowering the activation energy required) will also be discussed.
