EC Webinar on behalf of Ystral: The Art of making Paint – Innovations in Paint Production

15.00 h CET

The production of lacquers and paints demands precise processes, with dispersion being the most critical step. Dispersion refers to the intensive mixing of materials that resist blending. The quality of dispersion determines the effectiveness of pigments, fillers, and additives in the final product. While dissolver discs have been used for nearly a century, modern technologies like ystral Conti-TDS machines and Jetstream mixers are transforming the industry.

Abstract

The production of lacquers and paints demands precise processes, with dispersion being the most critical step. Dispersion refers to the intensive mixing of materials that resist blending. The quality of dispersion determines the effectiveness of pigments, fillers, and additives in the final product. While dissolver discs have been used for nearly a century, modern technologies like ystral Conti-TDS machines and Jetstream mixers are transforming the industry.

Traditional dissolvers, though long-standing, have significant limitations. They lack high shear forces and efficient mixing. Historically, high-viscosity media compensated for these deficiencies, creating sufficient shear even with the dissolver’s low shear gradient. However, this approach is inefficient, energy-intensive, and unsuitable for fine powders. Dissolvers are also uncommon in industries like chemical, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical production, which require higher-performance tools.

The ystral Conti-TDS system offers a groundbreaking alternative. It combines vacuum and extremely high shear forces in a small volume. The vacuum separates particles, which are then dispersed at shear rates 1,000 times higher and with volume-specific power 30,000 times greater than traditional methods. Key advantages include:

  •     Shorter process times,
  •     Lower energy consumption and reduced temperature increases,
  •     Improved product quality, and
  •     Savings in costs, raw materials, labor, and space requirements.

Another innovative solution is the Jetstream mixer, designed for homogeneous mixing. Traditional agitators often fail to achieve uniform suspensions, whereas Jetstream mixers reduce process times by up to 90% while delivering superior homogeneity. This results in higher-quality products and greater efficiency.

Modern systems like Conti-TDS and Jetstream mixers expose the inefficiencies of older methods. These advanced technologies address the challenges of contemporary manufacturing, offering improved efficiency, sustainability, and product quality. As a result, traditional tools like dissolvers are increasingly replaced by solutions tailored to meet the demands of today’s industries.
