EC Short Course | Polyurethane Coatings
Since it’s invention in the 1930’s, polyurethanes have proven to be a high performance and versatile chemistry for use in multiple coatings applications. These include automotive, aerospace, industrial corrosion prevention, factory applied metal and wood, along with construction applications such as decorative concrete and wood flooring. Polyurethanes are also well positioned to take advantage of the chemical industry’s move towards a bio-based/circular economy. Formulators and applicators have a wide variety of polyurethane raw materials and crosslinking methods to choose from. We will discuss how these structure properties, application methods, and curing methods allow the formulators and applicators achieve their desired coating properties.
This tutorial will discuss the raw materials used to make polyurethane coatings, their structures and properties. We will discuss 1-component and 2-component solvent and waterbased polyurethane coatings along with specialties such as blocked isocyanates, polyurethane dispersions and UV curable polyurethanes. We will also discuss how the polyurethane industry is utilizing bio-based and circular raw materials to enable the circular economy.

Speaker
Mike Jeffries
Mike began his career at Covestro (Mobay at the time) in 1989 working in the Quality Assurance Laboratory. In 1992 he moved into Research. There he worked on the scale up of the various polyisocyanates, polyisocyanate prepolymers, polyaspartics and polyurethane dispersions into production. In 1998 he specifically began working on the development on new isocyanate resins for use in the coatings industry. In 2007 Mike began a customer facing roll as a Field Technical Service Manager and became a technical resource for Covestro customers and the coatings industry. In 2022 Mike became a Business Development Manager in Covestro’s Coatings and Adhesives division. Mike has been awarded sixteen patents and holds a BS Degree from the University of Pittsburgh.Mike Jeffries
