Corrosion resistance of copolymerization graphene oxide composite coating

Acrylamide (AM)/acrylic acid (AA) functionalised graphene oxide (GO) composites (GMAs) were readily prepared by one-step copolymerisation and coated on the surface of magnesium alloy.

Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman results provided the evidences of the successfully polymerisation of AM/AA on the surface of GO nanosheets. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed the grafting amount of polymer to GO. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed that d-spacing of GO nanosheets increased with insertion of polymer chains.

Potential for application as corrosion resistance coatings

The morphologies of GMAs and dispersibilities of GO in aqueous solution were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM), which showed a polymeric layer covered the surface of GO sheets. The excellent dispersion of GO sheets in a polymer matrix can significantly enhance the corrosion protection effect for a metal substrate because the GO sheets played a role of the physical barriers and some polar groups in coatings could intercept corrosive ions. The developed one-step copolymerisation method was facile, rapid and the fabricated GMAs showed potential for application as corrosion resistance coatings.
