One message clearly took centre stage the whole time: yes, we see the dangers of climate change and yes, we have to do something. The coating industry has already recognised and accepted its task. In his keynote speech, Dr René Manski from Hobum explained that it is not enough just to switch to bio-based products, but that we need to look closely at all the details in order to really reduce our carbon footprint. In the second keynote speech, Dr Alfred Rössler from Adler went on to emphasise the importance of a circular economy. In the cradle to cradle concept, not only the production and use of a coating is considered, but also the end-of-life, and only if this is taken into account can holistic statements be made.

In the technical presentations in the two sessions on bio-based and water-based coatings, experts from industry and academia presented their current approaches to solutions. They repeatedly emphasised how important it is to look at the right key figures in order to avoid greenwashing. New materials with a high bio-contend, water-based and made from renewable raw materials are presented and it is clear to see that the industry is putting a lot of energy and effort into the journey towards a more sustainable future.

Besides the interesting presentations, networking was also a great part of the conference. Not only at the conference dinner at the Chocolate museum in Cologne, but also in every coffee break one could see participants exchange opinions and discuss topics on sustainability. In the networking activity on the second conference day it was again clear, in order to achieve the goals of the EU Green Deal, the coatings industry has to stand in unity.
