Axalta’s ISCC Plus Certification for biobased feedstock sourcing practices
The certification aims to support the transition to carbon neutrality and create a sustainable bioeconomy with less waste. To this end, it assesses the extent to which companies comply with the most important sustainability principles, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These in turn aim to reduce poverty and protect the planet.
Axalta was awarded ISCC Plus following a thorough audit of its supply chain and production processes by an independent third party. In particular, the ability to successfully manufacture some of the coating formulations with bio-based resins was recognized. Bio-based solutions are identical in terms of quality and properties to conventional polyester resins made from fossil fuels, but enable an average 25% reduction in CO2 emissions. Minor variations between the individual coating types are taken into account. This gives environmentally conscious decision makers in industrial markets access to coating solutions from sustainable and fully traceable sources.
Bio-based solutions
The bio-based solutions are made from organic non-food waste and contain significantly less embodied carbon. Shelley Bausch, President, Global Industrial Coatings at Axalta, said: “As a first in the powder coatings industry, the certification emphasizes that we are working to make a real impact on shared sustainability goals. We are committed to driving positive change throughout the value chain.”
