CoSI 2024
A firm favourite in the scientific community, CoSI was again well attended with around eighty scientists, researchers and formulators on-site. Whereas other events often emphasise the commercial uses of new technologies or cover a certain application area, this annual conference concentrates on the scientific foundations of the latest technological advancements and offers plenty of opportunities for networking. There was a remarkable breadth of topics including fire or ice prevention, transparent to self-matting coatings, molecular (water layers) to macroscopic characterisation as well as presentations on circular and biobased materials for coatings and attempts of life-cycle analyses.
As in previous years, three awards were available for Innovation, Creativity and Science. The latter ended up in a tie of votes and the participating members of the organising committee decided to award two prizes to Ignacio Martín-Fabiani for his presentation entitled “Understanding associative rheology modifier self-assembly with shrinking gate fluorescence correlation spectroscopy” and Michele Fedel who spoke on “Refining the mechanism of filiform corrosion on painted carbon steel.” The line up of award winners was completed by Henry Nguyen (Innovation) for his talk about “Studying chemical and topological rearrangements in covalent adaptive networks” and Louise Brandt (Creativity) for her poster presentation “Thermoset resins from mildly extracted lignin.”
Associate Professor Dr. Catarina Esteves, chair of the organising committee, from Eindhoven University of Technology, summed up her personal highlights of the week: “The high quality of scientific presentations which spanned over different topics in the coatings field. I think everyone in the audience learned something new and took home a few new ideas and contacts. Hence, mission accomplished.”
CoSI 2025 will take place from 30 June to 3 July at the Alexander Hotel in Noordwijk next year. It will be the 20th anniversary edition and the organising committee is hoping to have several special events, invited speakers and grants for student collaborations to celebrate. The call for abstracts will open on 16 September 2024.
