DAW opens a new distribution centre at the Ober-Ramstadt site
The building paints manufacturer DAW has invested extensively in logistics at its headquarters in Ober-Ramstadt. In April 2020, construction work began on a state-of-the-art logistics centre including a high-bay warehouse, which was officially inaugurated on 1 September. “The new distribution centre with a high degree of automation and digitalisation is a clear commitment to the Ober-Ramstadt location and,” says CEO Dr Ralf Murjahn, “goes hand in hand with a significant improvement in goods availability.” One of the objectives of the project was to unite the warehouses that were previously distributed at the site as well as the external warehouses in the region under one roof and thus optimise the entire supply chain processes. “Through automated processes, we are also creating a considerable reduction in workload for our logistics employees,” says Daniel Weber, Managing Director and responsible for the supply chain, happily.
Warehouse extended
In addition to the automated high-bay warehouse with about 30,000 storage locations for pallets, the logistics centre also includes an AutoStore system for small containers with 12,000 boxes for 4,500 articles and three picking locations, as well as a likewise automated, dynamic picking buffer with about 1,500 pallet and six picking locations. The buffer storage, AutoStore and picking locations are supplied by an electric overhead conveyor (EHB). Manual order picking on the first level comprises 650 order picking locations. Four ramps are available for central goods receipt, one of which is for jumbo trucks. The “goods to man” principle ensures maximum efficiency in the work in the new DAW finished goods warehouse, which is operated in three shifts.
