No pearls before swine
Cheap and sustainable
To produce asphalt fit for motorways the team extracted oil from pig waste and mixed the extract with stones. According to the researchers the new type is five times as cheap as the traditional petroleum-based asphalt.
The vision of long car rides through smelly streets comes to mind. But no worry necessary: During production those substances responsible for the pungent smell of pigs manure are filtered out. Moreover, the end products can be used as fertilizers. Reducing our dependence on petroleum and reusing waste – definitely a promising project, I am curious to see if the new asphalt will gain acceptance.
