BASF developed the novel coating technology and the first product – a barrier film – within a very short time. New materials, applied layer by layer in ultra-thin layers, give films additional properties, known as “functionalisation. These barrier films protect thin-film photovoltaics, for example, from harmful environmental influences.

Further fields of application

“Together with international partners, we are developing new applications for these films and are also thinking about functions beyond the barrier,” explains Jörg Lenz, head of the “Beyond Paint” business unit. With this technology, BASF’s Coatings division is entering a new field of activity and opening up new market segments. Other areas of application for the films include OLED displays and thin-film batteries.
