You have opened a subsidiary in India. What are the potentials and challenges there?

David Tierney: The Indian market has considerable potential for our products with high growth rates. We can also benefit from cost-efficient local raw material costs and services. Overall, India is very well suited as a service platform for the markets in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The rapidly growing population of the middle class and the expansion of major cities are significantly increasing the per capita consumption of paints in India. The main challenges are the weak infrastructure and the bureaucratic administration.

Regulations are increasing. Where do you see a need for support?

CEO Sanitized

Tierney: Until about five years ago, India was considered unregulated. Now significant regulations are being introduced. In other countries in which Sanitized is active, we also closely monitor the legal requirements and their changes and assist customers in complying with these criteria. We have always dealt with country-specific regulations worldwide and have extensive experience, even in the demanding markets of Europe and North America. We support our customers and industry associations in implementing these regulations.

How do you assess the market for antimicrobial protection of paints?

Tierney: This market is increasingly characterised by service and regulatory management. More and more it is the case that it is not the product but the supplier itself that makes the difference. You don’t want just any colour, you want a product that guarantees the performance that is promised. Brands can make a significant difference here.

What further development do you expect in the market?

Tierney: Due to stricter regulatory guidelines in many countries and the associated complexity and cost increases, we expect a consolidation among biocide suppliers as well as among paint manufacturers.
