When you look at research projects on coatings, many circle around enhancing or adding further functions to a system. Protection and decoration is a given, but further functions such as easy-to-clean, self-healing or anti-icing are demanded more and more. However, most of these systems are not ready for the market, yet – or still do not show the requested performance. Lawrence Gasman, N-Tech Research, gives an overview on notable trends in the market for self-healing materials. In his article, the author addresses important developments that he believes will move the self-healing market forward and are indicative of where future opportunities will be found in this space (page 16).

Self-healing is also in the focus of the article by Subramanyam Kasisomayajula and Gerald O. Wilson, Autonomic Materials. The authors show how to improve performance in organic zinc-rich primers to prevent corrosion (page 22). Zinc-rich coatings are used in a wide range of industries to protect steel substrates in extremely corrosive environments. The authors will present more in-depth information on that topic during our monthly webcast European Coatings LIVE on 24 July at 15.00 h (CET).
