Non-flammable, green alternative solvents to methyl ethyl ketone (MEK)

New non-flammable, environmentally-friendly solvents and solvent carrier systems enable researchers to utilise strong solvents while reducing safety, health and disposal concerns.

Methyl ethyl keytone (MEK) is a harsh solvent with many negative health concerns. It is also currently restricted for sales in California making an equivalent, safer alternative a priority. Necotek provides the following proven high-solvency alternatives for MEK:

  • “Necosolv PDB” and
  • “Necoflex” Thinner

The patent-pending products can be used to dilute any solvent that is commonly used with acrylics (e.g., methyl methacrylate copolymer) or polysiloxane (silicone-organic resin hybrids) solutions.

Properties include:

  • non-flammable, non-combustible (no flash observed – Pensky Martens closed cup ASTM D93 test)
  • strong solvency (Kauri-butanol/KB value of 87)
  • moderate evaporation rate (Boiling point of 87 °C or 189 °F)
  • not a “Hazardous Air Pollutant” (non-HAP)
  • low Toxicity
  • low or no Global Warming Potential (GWP) and Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP)
